Adapted to California's cycle of rainy winters and dry summers, the Buckeye trees are among the first to grow new leaves. In the duff below, last year's seeds attempt a toe-hold.

Kym, they look like fleur-de-lys at this stage, don't they?
P, I had a great shot of leaves actually sprouting up from a rooting seed, but the focus point missed it. (Didn't use viewfinder, put camera on the ground.) Maybe I save that view for next year. ;^)
