Mendocino Village Water Tower
In the 1960s, an artist who settled in the village established a coin-operated laundry on the ground level of this water tower building. I remember going there with my mom, and sitting in the sheltered garden behind it, admiring the mounds of nasturtiums.

Frank Grasse Dog Park
Named for a local veterinarian, this dog park is the most recent development in the community resource corridor along East Commercial Street in Willits. Comprised of two separate enclosures, it sits between the Roots of Motive Power display and demonstration area, and the skate park. Even in a rural community, a public space for non-farmers is a welcome opportunity to socialize whether you have four legs or two. The late Dr. Grasse wrote a popular book of vet stories under the pseudonym Charlie Freed http://www.amazon.com/Vet-Tails-Charlie-Freed/dp/1606045040 .

Hidden Legacy
The handrail for the steps leading to overflow parking at the Howard Hospital campus includes an echo of the Howard family racing silks used in the days of Seabiscuit.

Firewood
Primitive, and not so good for air quality, but a wood burning stove is all that heats the house at mom's place. Millions of people around the world do the same, in far tougher circumstances.

Gutter Eddies
The City public works people spent part of the morning giving a main water supply trunk line a good, thorough flush. Seems like a waste, but in the scheme of things, it is worth it to keep sediments out of the tap water. It is also good news that our water supply reservoirs are topped up to overflowing this season, after a decade of drought.
