Roots of Motive Power Christmas Locomotive

Each year, Roots of Motive Power organizes a Christmas train event in conjunction with the Mendocino County Museum. The weather cooperated with a very cold, but clear afternoon, which really shows off the steam. This big Heisler locomotive traveled around the loop track all afternoon, with pauses for water refills. I'm lucky to be in a town where upclose and personal views of such antique machinery in action is so freely available.

As always, I'll be posting more from this event here soon.

There is really something so exciting about a steam engine in action.

Good stuff! We are lucky to have the old trains still in action here in Fort Bragg also. I love hearing the steam whistle when the Skunk returns from a run to Northspur or Willits.

Your close-up photo of the running gear in the midst of steam was wonderful.

Thanks all!

I've photographed enough of these events by now, that I feel I'm repeating myself. Still, these machines are irresistible.

Go ahead, repeat yourself. We have a train museum here, but we don't get to see 'em in action.
